Stang Lake Project,
Fergus Falls, MN

In order to revive dry lake, a 200-foot long by 60-foot
wide dike was constructed by Delzer Construction. |
|
On November 4, 1908, Stang Lake, 5 miles east of
Fergus Falls, disappeared after a small ditch was dug as part of a project to install an
overflow pipe in a lakeside embankment. This seemingly simple task (dig ditch, install
pipe, refill ditch) became enormously complicated when one too many shovels of sandy soil
were moved, and the ditch gave way to the onslaught of lake water. |
|
By the 1990's, adjacent land owners were
interested in creating a wildlife habitat at old Stang Lake. The construction project
itself became a complicated challenge. The work included raising a county road by
eight feet, building a dike 200 feet long by 60 feet wide, and constructing an appropriate
water control structure. |
|
A project contract was awarded to us. We began
the job by clearing soil down to 20 feet below the watertable where a bentonite/cement
slurry wall was poured. The wall was two feet thick by 25 feet deep by 150 feet long.
Yellow clay was then imported from a nearby borrow site to construct the dam's body. |
